We worked on designing a space for our clients with the goal of a functional kitchen that was timeless in it’s materials, finishes and design.

We made custom white oak counters, and all of the custom cabinetry in our workshop.

The new fireplace included a natural lime based plaster.

We created a built in reading niche, next to the fireplace with integrated wood storage, which overlooks a brook and meadow view out the adjacent window.

Artists Studio

This barn was designed to remember the old barn that once sat on the same site, that was unfortunately beyond repair. The new structure was designed to be built with high performance and comfort in mind, while embracing the new use for a family of artists musical and visual pursuits.

Lantern Studio

We designed and built this music studio situated between the artists home, and flower gardens. We used a system known as, S-SIPS (Straw-Structural Insulated Panels), the panels were fabricated by our friends and colleagues at New Frame Works, and assembled and finished by Structure.

We used triple glazed windows, and straw for its great insulation values and acoustic attributes. The finishes included hemlock, and cedar siding at the exterior. The interior walls were finished with a lime based plaster, and the floors are rift sawn white oak. The stone used around the structure for the flower bed retaining walls were sourced locally and the steps were reclaimed granite curbs.

Mcbride

We re-imagined this home 1800’s home to be more conducive for the homeowner.

Updates included new addition at the front of the house, for a new front entry with privacy gradient and a new mudroom with more privacy from the sidewalk and road.

We also built an addition at the back of the home which included a new kitchen, and new full bathroom, and living room with a wood stove. This living room has a deck off the back that connects the homeowner to the outdoor garden and barn.

New, insulation, siding and windows, flooring throughout.

Custom kitchen cabinetry and island we designed, and fabricated at our wood shop.

Horse Barn to Passive House

We worked as the GC on this project, with Passive House designer Placetailor’s plans with the goal of renovating an existing 1800’s horse barn, and to create a Passive House level single family home.

We framed a structure, with in a structure to keep the existing exterior framing intact while highlighting some of the unique timber framing details, ceiling was finished with a veneer plaster.

We created a high performance building, by using dense pack cellulose at the walls R36, and ceilings R54, and triple glazed windows and doors throughout.

The project achieved a HERS rating of 38, and ACH50 of .73

Pond House

An off grid Strawbale Cabin, built while living off the grid.

Salvaged windows, locally sourced & milled hemlock framing and finishes, plaster and lime wash.

This was an experiment in design, and natural building inspired by mentor and friend Clark Sanders and the books of Christopher Alexander; Pattern Language and the Timeless Way of Building, and Lloyd Kahns books Shelter and Homework.

The house was designed and built as a college thesis project 2002-2005 and continues to evolve over time.

Pearl

We completely renovated this 1880’s home to make space for a family. Scope of work included vaulting the 3rd floor roof to allow for a more comfortable ceiling height, added two bedrooms and a deck off one of the bedrooms, new dormer, to make space for a full bathroom.

We designed & built a custom kitchen, and bathroom vanities, and installed reclaimed flooring, and cork.

This kitchen we designed and built was in a home attached to an old historic fire station in a former two story horse stable that was later converted into a residence in 1968 by architects Joan E. & Marvin Goody of Goody/Clancy.

We worked with the existing unique footprint, and developed an updated kitchen which included a custom cabinetry, island and new lighting.

Myrth

We worked with our friends to design a showroom to showcase their ceramics, which behind a sliding door reveals their ceramic studio.

We designed and custom made a shelving display system specifically designed for their plateware, and included custom cabinetry and a dining table to display their full offering of plate ware and ceramics.

ADU

We designed, and built this Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), for a client in their former utility room and basement that had been used for storage.

Counter tops were salvaged slate chalkboard from a school, that was slated for demolition and the floors were local pine.

Small footprint apartment that was finished with minimalism and function in mind.

Mid Century Home

We worked with the clients on doing a complete down to the framing renovation on a Mid Century Modern home. More energy efficiency and an updated floor plan to be conducive for their family. This included all new windows throughout, removing the basement slab and installing a radiant heating system, and all new mechanicals throughout the home.

We designed and built an addition off the side of the existing home to create a new side entry and mudroom, complete with custom cabinetry, and two new decks going into the back yard and patio.

We salvaged the trim during demo which we discovered had been walnut and at one point painted. The walnut was re-purposed and used to create custom cabinets, mirror and bathroom vanity in the home.

The custom kitchen we designed made in our woodshop.

1963 Airstream Renovation. This relic was found while riding the gravel back roads of western massachusetts. Sat for a few years at our shop before doing a complete renovation on the camper, to be set up as an off grid retreat in the Catskills.

School House

Currently underconstruction in the Catskills, an 1845 one room school house. After about 100 years of it being one of the many one room school houses in the community it closed, and was turned into a hunting cabin. In the mid 1960’s, the old school house was lifted from its location, and an addition was built. The house was moved off the old field stone foundation and was replaced with a new concrete foundation with a garage and basement below the home, with bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen upstairs.

The house is now being reimagined and modernized, with a new floor plan, and going through a deep energy retrofit using passive house design principles. New windows, double framed walls with dense pack cellulose insulation, and a high efficiency heating system. While there are many updates to modernize this home, we are highlighting some of the unique original details of the past such as keeping much of the original bead board intact, and exposing the moments of hand hued timberframing, and using lime based plaster throughout.
